On a recent trip to Geneva, I found myself roaming the streets in Pâquis Centre. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but I knew I’d know once I saw it. And there it was, this beautiful Blue Whale ramen bowl in the window of a Japanese furniture shop called Futon Asia.
The Blue Whale Collection: An Artistic Masterpiece
Made by a Japanese company called Minoru Touki Ceramics, the Blue Whale Ramen and Rice Bowl collection is a celebration of marine life, specifically the majestic blue whale. This collection–part of “Mino ware” or “Mino yaki” form of Japanese ceramics–stands out for its intricate designs, meticulous craftsmanship, and symbolic depth.
For me, the navy blue and white color palette, the swirls of the waves, and the whale itself, really come together in an appealing and desirable product. I bought a set of these bowls just because I love the Japanese aesthetic, and I’m yet to eat out of them!
Design Inspiration
The inspiration behind the Blue Whale collection lies in the graceful presence of blue whales, the largest mammals on Earth. These creatures symbolize tranquility, depth, and the mysteries of the ocean. Each bowl in this collection features detailed illustrations of blue whales swimming through stylized waves, creating a serene and captivating visual narrative.
The wave design on the outer surface of the bowl is achieved through an innovative embossing technique, which uses hydrophobic agents to create a textured effect. This advanced method not only maintains the high artistic quality of the bowl but also ensures that it remains affordable without sacrificing design integrity. Each bowl, therefore, carries a unique touch, blending traditional aesthetics with modern ceramic techniques.
Color Palette and Glazing Techniques
The color palette of the Blue Whale collection is dominated by shades of blue and white, reminiscent of traditional Japanese ceramics. The deep blue hues represent the vastness of the ocean, while the white symbolizes purity and simplicity, reflecting Zen philosophy. The glazing techniques used in this collection are a testament to the artisans’ skill and attention to detail. The glaze is carefully applied to create a smooth, glossy finish that enhances the intricate designs.
Symbolism and Cultural Significance
In Japanese culture, whales are considered symbols of prosperity and good luck. The Blue Whale collection not only serves a functional purpose but also brings a sense of positivity and well-being to the dining experience. The use of marine motifs is a tribute to Japan’s coastal geography and maritime heritage, emphasizing the nation’s deep connection to nature.
The minimalist design of the Blue Whale collection aligns with the principles of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and simplicity. This aesthetic philosophy encourages a mindful appreciation of the present moment, making the Blue Whale bowls more than just tableware—they are tools for fostering a Zen-like sense of peace and mindfulness.
The Art of Presentation
The Blue Whale Ramen and Rice Bowl collection excels in both form and function. The bowls’ elegant design makes them perfect for presenting traditional Japanese dishes, such as ramen and rice. The deep, wide shape of the ramen bowls allows for generous portions, while the rice bowls are ideal for serving individual servings of rice, soups, or salads.
When used in a dining setting, these bowls elevate the overall aesthetic, transforming a meal into an artistic experience. The intricate whale designs add a touch of whimsy and elegance, making each meal feel special and thoughtfully prepared.
Where to Purchase the Blue Whale Mino Ware
Thankfully, you don’t have to travel to Geneva to get your own Blue Whale Ramen bowl. They’re inexpensive with the large ramen and rice bowls selling for about $25 each.
The set is easily available from online retailers which sell Mino ware such as Shokunin Store, Kitchen Warehouse, and Amazon. Note that Minoru Touki Ceramics does not sell direct to customer.
What is Mino Ware?
Mino ware, originating from Gifu Prefecture, boasts a history that spans over 1300 years. This type of pottery is renowned for its versatility and beauty, playing a significant role in Japanese tea ceremonies and everyday life. The techniques and styles of Mino ware have evolved over the centuries, reflecting changes in aesthetic preferences and technological advancements.
One of the distinguishing features of Mino ware is its diverse range of glazes and forms. From the earthy Shino and Oribe styles to the elegant Kizeto and Setoguro, Mino ware showcases the rich cultural heritage of Japan. The artisans of Gifu Prefecture have perfected the art of balancing traditional methods with innovative approaches, ensuring that Mino ware remains relevant and cherished.
Today, the legacy of Mino ware continues through dedicated artisans and modern ceramics companies like Minoru Touki Ceramics. These contemporary creators draw on old techniques to mass produce pieces that resonate with today’s aesthetic preferences. The Blue Whale Ramen and Rice Bowl collection, for instance, reflects the timeless beauty and functionality that have long defined Mino ware.
